Jude had somehow lost his balance on the swing as Meimei was holding him, causing them both to fall. Jude fell on his back and pain spread throughout him. After a moment it passed, but all he could do was groan. He opened his eyes to find Meimei had her eyes shut tight. She was on top of him and between his legs. He was frozen. Her body was pressed right against his and he didn't know how to react. Part of him wanted to ask if she was okay and the other half wanted to push her off and run away. This was all happening too fast. His heart sped up and his breath quickened.
"M-Meimei?!" He couldn't control his emotions anymore.
"Owchhhh…" was the only reply he got. She sat up on him and felt her head. "What happened there?"
Jude propped himself up and moved a little. He wanted her off him pronto, but he didn't want to be rude. He could feel himself panicking. This looked really bad. Just then Meimei opened her eyes and saw how she was positioned. Her eyes turned into the size of oranges.
"Oh my goodness! I'm so sorry!" And with those words she shot up off him and ran away. He saw her cover her face with her hands as she ran. He was left there on the ground wondering what on earth DID just happen. Jude put his hand to his head and sighed. His heart was pumping so fast he thought it would explode. "Sh-she was so… soft." He thought, but instantly shook his head. He shouldn't think things like that.
Jude got up and brushed the dirt off his clothes as quick as he could. A slight sharp pain made it's way up his right leg when he moved it. It would go away with time, he hoped. He looked around hurriedly, trying not to look too suspicious. He was sure there would be plenty of assumptions if someone saw the accident just displayed. After collecting himself for a few brief moments, Jude slowly made his way home. He would now have to face the silence of his mother. Would she even bother to ask how his day at school was? Or would she still be staring into her cold coffee cup? It was like she would never move from that spot. Something would have to be done soon.
He came to a halt. He had tried so many things to get his mother back to her normal self. Therapists, psychiatrists, even his own family couldn't get to her. Their family had long since disowned them after everything; they thought his mother was a lunatic. Deep down inside her knew a part of him even dyed his hair the way he did in order to get a small reaction out of her. Still nothing. Jude was beginning to feel how alone in the world he really was.

But then there was Meimei.

Dear, sweet Meimei. She was so kind to him so openly. "It's best not to get involved" a small voice within himself whispered. Why? There is nothing wrong with a friendship. It would be nice to have someone even act like they cared about him. "You'll get hurt" it whispered back. Nonsense. I'm sure I'm stronger than even I know. However, there was a twinge of doubt as he thought those words to himself. No one knows me better than me…

Meimei was still running hard to her house. She couldn't believe what had just happened. How DID it happen? Things were going so well, then she… She couldn't even think about it. It was completely embarrassing. How could she ever face Jude now? It probably wasn't a big deal, after all it was a simple mistake. But Meimei couldn't get the image out of her head. Her between his legs, Jude's face completely blood red, his eyes so large, but worst of all, he looked so scared, so frightened. Her actions had made him scared. But it wasn't her fault! Meimei was never clumsy, it was just a terrible coincidence.
It was then she remembered what she had done prior. Her face flushed pink as she thought back to the subtle kiss she has planted on his surprisingly soft cheek, the warm embrace she had given to his lean body. She had no idea what possessed her to do that. Jude just seemed so forlorn, so helpless. She wanted to help him. Meimei had only seen that look once before, and it was on her mother's face when she found out she had lost her little brother. She winced. That memory had not been reflected on in some time. She slowed down, out of breath. Her lungs hurt as she gulped for air. Home was about three blocks away, but she suddenly didn't want to be there. Why did she have to think of that all of the sudden.
Her mother had been pregnant once more about ten years ago. Meimei was only 7 years old. Everyone was so excited that a new child was going to be in their midst. So many things were prepared: a new baby's room, all sorts of toys and trinkets, clothes; all sorts of things. But most of all Meimei was excited to have a little baby brother. Someone she could tell her friends at school about. They would all be jealous that she would be practically a grown-up. However, late in her pregnancy Meimei's mother and the baby started having problems, unexplainable problems. Suddenly things went from happiness to turmoil. The baby was soon lost, and Meimei's mother thrust herself into anguish and sorrow.
Now the exact same look in her eyes was now facing her again in the form of a classmate. A boy who was secretly in pain and full of angst. She could do nothing to help her mother, but maybe she could help this boy.

Perhaps that's what had drawn Jude to her as soon as she made eye contact with him. It was like a second chance was before her; she could make things right. Meimei had always felt guilty that she could never help her mother. Her mother didn't want Meimei around for the next few years; it only reminded her of the child she would never have. Meimei's hands curled into balls. She promised herself she would never think upon this again, but the tables were turning and she had no choice but to tolerate the memories.
It was then that Meimei realized she was crying, how long had it been since she had cried? "You don't have to help this boy" a small voice from deep inside said. Yes I do, it's the only way I can atone. It was the perfect opportunity to make things right, if she did this she could forget the hell her mother went through, the rejection she felt from her early years. "You know the pain will be too much to bear. You know what happened last time" it responded. No… That will never, ever happen again. A shudder went through her. She hated thinking about it. It was her biggest secret. She would never tell anyone as long as she lived.

It was getting dark. Meimei had lost track of time with her thoughts. Her parents would probably be worried she hadn't returned yet. She looked behind her quickly and started walking home. Tomorrow a new day would begin, another chance to prove herself, and another attempt to try to get Jude to break down his wall.
